A recent Léger survey commissioned by Allstate Canada reveals a growing risk for homeowners who share vacation plans on social media. According to the survey, 32% of Canadians who use social platforms post about their trips before or during their vacation—and this jumps to 51% among those aged 18 to 34. At the same time, nearly 70% of Canadians plan to travel this summer and are concerned about protecting their homes while away.
Allstate warns that sharing vacation details online can inadvertently alert would-be thieves that your home is unoccupied. Claims data shows a slight increase in home break-ins during summer months, especially in August, with Fridays and Thursdays being the most common days for theft.
To help reduce risk, Allstate recommends delaying vacation posts until after returning home and using privacy settings to control who can see your content. Other tips include pausing mail delivery, installing light timers, and reviewing your home insurance coverage before you leave.
Now is the perfect time to remind clients that good digital habits and solid insurance coverage go hand in hand. A quick conversation before vacation season could prevent serious headaches down the road.
