Auto Thefts Drop 19% in First Half of 2025, but Vigilance Remains Key

Canada saw a significant 19.1% drop in auto thefts during the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, signifying real progress in the fight against vehicle crime. A total of 23,094 private passenger vehicles were stolen, down from 28,549 in 2024. Regionally, the decline was most pronounced in Ontario (–25.9%) and Quebec (–22.2%), both of which previously experienced the highest theft rates. Western Canada fell by 9.4%, with Alberta dropping 12.5%, and Atlantic Canada seeing a 9% reduction.

While the numbers are encouraging, Équité Association warns that the battle is far from over. Criminals are adapting, increasingly targeting vehicles for chop-shop dismantling or re‑Vin operations, making recovery more difficult. The association emphasizes the importance of implementing the new harmonized Canada–U.S. standard for vehicle theft deterrent systems (ULC 338) to prevent thefts before they happen.

Équité remains committed to advancing its investigative capabilities and technologies, and encourages collaboration among insurers, law enforcement, and government agencies to sustain and build on this positive momentum.
